Keywords: Jack Glatzer The most haunting and mysterious of all the caprices of Paganini and maybe of all the works of violin literature is this magnificent 6th caprice. Now when Paganini died he was not allowed to be buried in a normal cemetery, the church really feared that he had made a evil pact with the devil and so for 36 years from 1840 until 1876 his body was moved from one place to another until the church finally relented and allowed it burial in the consecrated ground. And there is a great tragic irony in all of this because during Paganini life he was so mistreated that sometimes he would say 'One hope remains and that is that after my death, calumny will abandon its prey and that those who have so cruelly avenged my triumph will leave my ashes at rest.' and that did not happen and his body was moved nine times in those years after his death. One of the many burial places of Paganini was at Ville Franche near Nice in the crypt of a leper colony and curiosity seekers would pass by there to see the cadaver of Paganini and some said that they could actually hear the sound of a haunted violin played by the ghost of Paganini. And I'm wondering if that ghost didn't play the 6th caprice. [Music] Its two long pages of a magnificent trill accompanied by the colours of open strings, sometimes by closed, sometimes in the flute like register and then sometimes closer to the bridge and there's almost a shimmering quality, a ghostliness of waves and wind that can be heard. Such wonderful suggestive haunting music. [Music]
