Paganini caprice 18

Keywords: Jack Glatzer This 18th caprice should be a paired with number nine because it too is a hunting scene. It begins on one string, on the G string alone with a splendid imitation of a hunting horn. [Music] Paganini was known to break his strings during the concerts, and sometimes he would even end up by playing on one string alone. And then in the middle section is a scintillating and elegant series of passages, usually in thirds but sometimes in sixths. With the spiccato bow bouncing lightly and this obviously represents the way little animals move back and forth. They even stop almost to look around as rabbits would do. And I like to give a bit of colourful variation to this particular caprice by playing the ninore (the minor section) again on the fingerboard as we heard in the ninth caprice, and this gives a little bit of contrast to the rather brighter major sections of the caprice number 18.
