Paganini caprice 9

Keywords: Jack Glatzer The 9th caprice is called 'La Chasse', (the hunt) and it's a charming picture of a hunting scene complete with horses, and instruments that the hunters play and even the little rabbit in one of the episodes. Now the opening part gives you some sounds which are rarely heard on a violin, sound imitating flutes and imitating horns and Paganini asks for this. [Music] The way is done is quite fascinating, because to play the type of flute sounds one uses a very very light bow, almost in the middle of the fingerboard. One gram or two gram certainly suffices and more than that would not be possible to produce these delightful hollow sounds. Paganini indicates that we should play 'Sur la tace tierra' on the fingerboard imitating these instruments. The next episode is a little bit heavier with a three string chord at the down beat of each of these trotting rhythms. Then the most charming of the episodes is the one that starts with the trumpet call in octaves and then a shooting very quick ricochet with the left had fingers moving very quick and in coordination with the ricocheting bouncing bow, and this will give the sensation of a little animal who darts and flips about. [Music] Sometimes I like to add left hand pizzicato and then even there are some lovely little two note episodes of flutes here and played in harmonics. This is one of the most charming of the caprices for sure. [Music]
