Paganini caprice 10
Video by

4 minutes, 15 seconds long

Keywords: Jack Glatzer This 10th caprice has an incredible intensity and darkness about it, the same rhythm is repeated throughout the work so that it's almost hypnotic by the end. I like to associate this with some strange legend of Paganini horse, that was no ordinary horse. It was black, fierce and enormous, out of its eyes you could see flashes of darting lightening and Paganini actually whipped the horse until it was seen to fly. [Music] And in this work he whips the violin with the bow, and the bow returns often with fierce sounds of the flying staccato. And when people saw this flying staccati strokes, they actually said they could see sparks flying from the strings of the bow just as there were sparks coming from the eyes of the famous black horse. One of the leading critics in Paris wrote about the famous devil's trill of Tartini saying 'In a dream Tartini saw a devil playing a diabolic sonata, that devil was surely Paganini.' [Music]
